Salesforce.com, founded in March 1999 is a Software as a Solutions (SaaS) company and has developed many Customer Relationship Management (CRM) products. The company hosts applications offsite and offers software solutions on a subscription basis to customers.

The company was set up by Parker Harris, Marc Benioff, Dave Moellenhoff, and Frank Dominguez. Its headquarters is in San Francisco, California and has 72,500 customers and more than 2,100,000 subscribers. The S&P 500 index inducted Salesforce.com to its list after September 12, 2008.

The company has acquired many companies including Sendia, Kieden, Koral, Instranet and Jigsaw Data Corp. Salesforce.com's CRM solution consists of several modules including Sales, Service & Support, Partner Relationship Management, Marketing, Content, Ideas, Analytics, and their collaboration platform, Chatter.

Salesforce.com offers Force.com Platform which is a Platform-as-a-Service product. External developers are able to use this service to create add-on applications to suit their needs. These add-on applications integrate into the main Salesforce application. These applications are hosted using the infrastructure provided by Salesforce.com.

Chatter, a real-time collaboration platform developed by Salesforce.com is similar in nature to Facebook. It enables people to work together and share data in a private, secure, social environment. Through Chatter, a real time news stream provides required information to people. It eliminates the need to search for data and documents that people require in work and enables them to work efficiently.

Third-party developers have built applications which can be used in collaboration with Salesforce products. AppExchange provides a directory of such applications developed, which can be purchased and used by users, in the Sales force set up.
