SugarCRM, founded in 2004, provides open source software solutions and CRM systems. The company set up by Clint Oram, John Roberts and Jacob Taylor, is known for its software solution - the Sugar Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. In April 2004, the company took shape through an open-source project on Sourceforge.
The company operates many web sites, including a development web site (SugarForge.org), a commercial web site SugarCRM.com, user forums and Sugar Exchange (for third-party extensions).
The open source project on Sourceforge became popular and gained many users. Due to this, the company managed to raise venture capital of $46 million. The companies which invested in Sugar CRM include Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Walden International and New Enterprise Associates. Currently, over 150 people are employed by SugarCRM. Sugar Open Source project continues to attract web users, counted as one of the most active projects on SourceForge. This software has been downloaded over 7,000,000 times.
The company develops CRM software in three editions; Sugar Community Edition, Sugar Professional and Sugar Enterprise. The same code tree is used to derive the products. About 85 percent of the functionality contained in Sugar Enterprise and Sugar Professional is present in Sugar Community Edition. The products originated on the LAMP stack of Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. However, other platforms that can deliver PHP (such as Windows, Solaris and Mac OS X) can also be used to run the products. SugarCRM offers on-premise offerings, software as a Service (SaaS), apart from appliance solutions. The product supports sales-force automation, customer support, collaboration, marketing campaigns and reporting.
While the Sugar Community Edition is offered free of cost, Sugar Professional and and Sugar Enterprise are subscription – based products.
